World Habitat Day 2017

World Habitat Day has been marked as the first Monday of October every year by the United Nations since 1985. The purpose of such a distinct day was given to reflect the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all to adequate shelter.

This is also a day to significantly remind the world that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns.

The theme for this year World Habitat Day 2017 scheduled for the 2nd of October is titled as “Housing Policies: Affordable Homes”

sustainable development policies

adequate shelter for all

Each year, World Habitat Day takes on a new theme to promote sustainable development policies that ensure adequate shelter for all. These themes often promote one of UN-Habitat’s focal areas such as:

  • Inclusive housing and social services
  • A safe and healthy living environment for all — with particular consideration for children, youth, women, elderly and disabled
  • Affordable and sustainable transport and energy
  • Promotion, protection, and restoration of green urban spaces
  • Safe and clean drinking water and sanitation
  • Healthy air quality
  • Job creation
  • Improved urban planning and slum upgrading
  • Better waste management

The purpose is to make everyone join together as one global network in communicating the message that every one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future, and that a decent place to live can remove barriers to opportunity, health and success that might have been part of a family’s life for years, and in many cases for generations.
